Social media sites like Facebook provide a place to fill out your profile with interests, education, contact information and profile pictures. Even Twitter comes with a slimmed-down version of a profile for easy ways to connect with people. Many people leave their profiles empty not realizing the downsides to empty profiles. The search forms on Twitter and Facebook search the profiles for matches. What should you add to your profile?

Your Contact Information
Make sure to enter contact information. When you use social media sites to network, you want your followers and friends to be able to contact you offline. Provide at the very least an email address. Businesses should provide a physical address.

Your Profile Photo
People are visually stimulated. Not providing a photo makes you seem anonymous and anonymity is bad on social media networks. Always have some sort of photo. A headshot is best but even a logo or a similar interest is better than nothing.

Your Educational Background
When using Facebook and Twitter to network, you want to include your education and experiences. People connect with others of like background. They also may want to hire you and not including this information means you lose the job.

With social media being used in nearly all aspects of our lives, creating an appropriate profile has become a new art. Choosing the right introductions, photos and even proper status updates can mean the difference between having a successful profile or being looked over without a thought.

For a professional profile there are a few things to always keep in mind. Simple and minor changes to a professional profile such as choosing the right picture can often draw the right people to your profile. Is this new to you? Catch up here It is also imperative that proper language and spelling is utilized when trying to put forth a professional profile for others to view.

When posting to a professional profile, be sure to remember who will be looking at it. Try to avoid personal comments or rude, lude or inappropriate language. It is not unheard of for an employee to loose a job simply because of a poorly thought out post to a profile.

When it comes to personal profiles, much of the same advice applies. You should still take care in your photo selection to assure you are representing yourself in the color you hope. Posts however can contain more personal information and status information. It is not recommended that you share intimate information. Information such as current address, full names and phone number can often lead to unwanted contact from those who have perused your profile.

Most websites such as social media networks create a profile for your username. This profile provides your name, contact information, interests and a profile picture. The profile tools provide a way for other users to find you, interact with you and establish a connection on the site. Here are three reasons why you should improve your profile today.

Searching
Many websites provide a method of connecting with others by uploading their address book. They match the email addresses against the profile database to establish the connection. When you fill out your profile with an email address, your friends easily connect with you when they sign up for the website.

Marketing
When you want to sell something on a website, people want to know your credentials. Filling out your profile with your education and experience increase the likelihood that someone will hire you over your competitor. Be proud of your accomplishments and place them in your profile for everyone to see!

Networking
Many sites let people search for others with similar interests. By filling out your profile, you give searchers a way to connect and network with you based on similar interests. Failure to fill out your profile means you make less connections and lose out on opportunities.

Twitter is a useful tool for communicating with your friends and clients — if you manage your account the right way. Setting up a Twitter account takes just a few minutes, and so does sending out your tweets, but you should spend equal time considering how to construct your messages and exactly how many you will send out.

You’re always restricted to 140 characters per tweet, but that doesn’t mean you have to use the maximum amount. Delete all unnecessary words before you send your tweet; redundancy can make your tweet confusing or boring.

Since your tweets are basically a form of marketing in many cases, whether it be a personal brand or the company for which you work, it’s also important that you take the time to craft an interesting and well articulated message. As a general rule, always proofread your tweets to make sure that the spelling is correct and the overall message makes sense.

Think carefully about the way you abbreviate things. The character restriction often means that you must shorten key words and phrases, but you should do it in a way that the abbreviation cannot be mistaken for another word or end up confusing your reader.
